FLAVORx flavors are highly concentrated, so the pharmacist only needs to add a small amount to mask the medicine’s taste. All flavoring recipes are formulated so that the added flavoring is less than 5% of the medication’s total volume.
Every liquid children’s medication comes pre-flavored by the manufacturer of the drug. But that doesn’t mean it tastes good. And it certainly doesn’t mean it tastes like something your child likes. FLAVORx is designed to mask the existing taste, including the yucky part.
Hundreds of liquid medications can be flavored with FLAVORx to make it easier for kids to take medicine. Pharmacies can flavor commonly prescribed antibiotics like amoxicillin, Augmentin (amoxicillin clavulanate), cefdinir, cephalexin, clindamycin, and azithromycin. FLAVORx can also be used to flavor antivirals like Tamiflu (oseltamivir), GERD medications like famotidine, and steroids like prednisolone.
Nope. For powdered medicines that get mixed with water, your pharmacist simply uses a little less water to make room for the flavor — so the strength stays exactly the same. For liquid medicines, the flavoring is kept under 5% of the total volume, which falls well within the FDA’s safety standards. The expiration date doesn't change either.
For most kids, yes. FLAVORx flavors don't contain milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, wheat, fish, shellfish, seeds, latex, or dyes, and they're sugar-free too. One heads-up though: our flavors are made in a facility that also handles some of those allergens, so if your child has a severe allergy, please chat with your pharmacist or pediatrician first.
You're good to go. All our flavors are sugar-free and sweetened with stevia (the same natural sweetener you might use at home). They won't raise blood glucose levels.
A few do contain a very small amount. The amount that actually makes it into your child's medicine is tiny, but if you'd rather avoid alcohol altogether, just let your pharmacist know and they can steer you toward an alcohol-free option.
Easy! When you drop off the prescription (or when you call it in), just ask, "Can you flavor this?" If your pharmacy offers FLAVORx, they'll show you the flavor options and add it right then. Not sure if your pharmacy participates? You can find one near you using the pharmacy locator.
Pricing is set by each individual pharmacy, so it varies. Sometimes it’s free. Sometimes it’s a few dollars per prescription — well worth it to skip the nightly medicine battle. Your pharmacist can give you the exact price.
Yes! If the pharmacy that filled the prescription offers FLAVORx, just bring the bottle back and they can flavor what's left. And don't worry — the new flavor will cover up the old taste, not blend with it.
Absolutely, and honestly that's half the magic. Letting kids choose gives them a little ownership over taking their medicine, which tends to make the whole process go a lot smoother. Your pharmacist will walk you through which flavors pair best with your child's specific prescription.
